Gas Technology Institute (GTI) is the leading research, development and training organization addressing global energy and environmental challenges to enable a secure, abundant, and affordable energy future. For more than 70 years, we have been providing economic value to the natural gas industry and energy markets by developing technology-based solutions for industry, government, and consumers.
GTI provides programs and services (contract R&D, collaborative R&D, technical and analytical services, and education programs) to industry, government and consortia that seek competitive advantages through the development and implementation of technology. GTI programs help organizations outsource and leverage technology investments.
Our research initiatives solve important energy challenges across the industry’s value chain—supply, delivery, and end use. From concept to commercialization, we offer an integrated systems perspective to expand the supply of natural gas and renewable energy, ensure a safe and reliable natural gas infrastructure, promote the efficient use of energy resources, and address carbon management concerns.
GTI is located on an 18-acre site in the Chicago suburb of Des Plaines, IL, near O'Hare Airport. The facility houses nearly 250 of GTI’s professional and support staff, and over 280,000 square feet of office, laboratory, shop, library, and training space with over 110,000 square feet devoted to laboratory, fabrication and testing facilities. GTI also operates offices and facilities in Washington, D.C., Houston, TX, Dallas, TX, Birmingham, AL, Sacramento, CA, Needham, MA, and Pittsburgh, PA.
Company History
GTI was created in April 2000, by the combination of Gas Research Institute (GRI) and the Institute of Gas Technology (IGT). For decades, GRI and IGT were the major research and technology development organizations for the U.S. natural gas industry and its customers. (IGT was founded in 1941, GRI in 1976.)
