- Water Production Operator
Description
Under general supervision, the Water Production Operator participates in the operation and maintenance of water production facilities. There are currently two (2) full-time openings in the Water Services Division of the Public Works Department.

Essential Duties
- Performs preventive maintenance on internal combustion engines, booster pumps, electric motors, and pipes and appurtenances, and may confer with supervisor regarding major repairs and/or replacement of components or entire units;
- Inspects production facilities, checks pressures, reservoir levels and status of pumping equipment and pressure regulator stations;
- Actuates controls - manual, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electric or electronic - to start or stop such functions as may be required;
- Inspects production facility's equipment through checking oil levels, bearing noises, temperatures, vibrations, and megs electrical windings;
Checks amperage, adjusts hydropneumatic settings and checks for sanding conditions; - Inspects vacuum manifolds, tachometers, spark plugs, contacts and terminals, gears, control piping, dry wells, strainers, probes and other components;
Monitors and maintains chemical application equipment; - Reads recorders, meters and gauges, and records readings, makes field computations and adjustments on equipment, immediately reports unusual operating conditions;
- Maintains and repairs supporting structures, vaults, fencing and sites for any or all production facilities;
- Performs inspection and maintenance functions in confined spaces;
- Prepares routine operational and maintenance reports;
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from an accredited high school or successful completion of the G.E.D. (General Educational Development) exam and one (1) year of experience in a potable water related field. Experience in the maintenance and repair of internal combustion engines, Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) panels and related controls, or with pump control values, chlorinators, and electrical equipment is highly desirable.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Candidates must possess a Grade 1 Water Distribution (D1) certificate and Grade 1 Water Treatment (T1) certificate from the California Department of Public Health at the time of application. Please attach a copy of your certificates to your online application.
A valid California Class "C" driver license and an acceptable driving record. An acceptable driving record is one that has three (3) or fewer DMV points issued within the past five (5) years, and no more than one (1) DUI within the past ten (10) years.
KNOWLEDGE OF
Materials, methods and equipment used in the operation and maintenance of water production facilities; the principles of: hydraulics, pump operations, electronic equipment and controls, including the terms, methods, machinery and equipment; use of telemetering equipment, cathodic protection systems, chemical application systems, and metering and recording devices; the regulation of water; and customer service techniques and principles.
ABILITY TO
Read metering devices accurately; keep accurate records; perform all necessary maintenance functions, including valve adjustments, oil changes, emissions monitoring and adjustments on internal combustion engines; booster pumps, electric motors and pipes/appurtenances; follow verbal and written directions; work independently and in close quarters; and commit to providing quality customer service.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Incumbents in this class stand, turn/twist, crouch/kneel/squat, reach above and below shoulder level, lift and carry up to 100 pounds with assistance, perform confined space entry, power grasp, speak clearly, hear normal voice conversation, distinguish shades/color vision, see small details and drive a vehicle.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Incumbents in this class work outside, inside, alone (no one near by) and around moving vehicles. The incumbents also work with: hands in water, loud noise, sharp objects, chemicals, toxic materials, dangerous machinery and machinery with moving parts; work overtime, weekends, and/or 24 hour on-call shifts as needed.
PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Use of the following protective equipment will be required: safety boots, vision and face protection and hearing protection.
